"
Of all competitive activities, bridge is unique because it offers you
the opportunity to improve by competing against better players. The
amateur golfer can't play a foursome with Tiger Woods; the average
tennis player could never hope for a match against Navratilova. But even
novice bridge players can sit down at a tournament and play against
experts and world champions. "
-- Mike Lawrence, bridge author & world champion

2009-2010 New
Life Masters
As we all
know, the primary goal of most duplicate bridge players participating
in ACBL sanctioned games is to achieve the rank of Life Master,
requiring 300 master points. Of this number, 50 points must be
earned in sectional tournaments and 50 in regional or national
tournaments and of those, 25 must be the result of placing
overall in an event.
Of the hundred sixty thousand members of the ACBL, only about 40%
have been able to reach this pinnacle of success.

Kathy Evans earns Life
Master Status: Quietly
accumulating gold, red and
silver points along with a
bushel of Black points, Kathy
reached the rank of Life Master
this past month at the Reno
Holiday Regional . Playing on a
successful knock out team and
scoring well in pair events,
Kathy, a member of Reno Unit 473
Board of Directors has built a
reputation for good and
consistent play. Kathy is the
author of the Reno Unit Report
that appears in the District 21
Forum each month. A consistent
player with sound instincts,
Kathy is now challenging
her husband Conrad for the title
of "who is the best player in
the Evans household."
Congratulations Kathy, now on to
the Bronze.

Gil Ramirez Congratulates
Virginia Jensen, Reno's newest Life Master |
Virginia Jensen
Life Master:
At long last Virginia Jensen has won the required number
of gold points to reach the rank of Life Master. But
wait, she also has earned enough master points to
achieve the level of Bronze Life Master since she has
accumulated well over the required 500 points necessary
for recognition as a Bronze LM. Here we see Gil
Ramirez, Reno Unit President congratulating Virginia for
her accomplishment. Reno Unit Members have long been
aware of the skill of this feisty competitor and
lamented the fact that for over 30 years while she
played competitive duplicate bridge in Saudi Arabia and
other Mid East countries, earning victory points by the
hundreds, since she was not a member, the points won in
these foreign jurisdictions were not recognized by the
American Contract Bridge League. So when Virginia
returned to the States, she had to start all over again
to earn that vaunted rank of Life Master from scratch.
Earning well over 650 master points in Reno and environs
in Club Games and Sectional events since her return to
America, Virginia was only six Gold points short of the
required 25 pigmented points to earn her Life Master
Rank. Scoring well in this week's Reno Holiday Regional
Tournament while participating in three Senior
Championship events over the first three days, tonight,
playing with her favorite partner, Mel Edelblute, she placed well in the
overall standings thus winning the final Gold points
needed to qualify for her Life Master and Bronze Life
Master ranking both at the same time.

Thomas J Howell
has achieved the required number of Gold, red and silver
points to qualify for the rank of Life Master. As a
matter of fact Tom has also qualified for designation as
a bronze life Master, having won a total of of 500
points of all pigments. , This rank requires 300 master
points(50 pigmented, with at least 5 gold, 15 red or
gold and 25 silver) Tom has been very successful in
recent regional tournaments particularly the Reno Regional played
last year between Christmas and New Years. Tom is a
Director of the Reno Unit of the ACBL and acts a
Treasurer of that body.

Linda Averett:
As a resident of Reno since the age of seven,
Linda attended Reno middle schools, high school and UNR. At 21 she
founded a retail health food store. Eventually with her husband Stan,
they owned seven retail stores and produced and marketed a line of
gourmet food products nationally and internationally. Stan and Linda
have two sons, both of whom are civil engineers living here in Reno.
They also have a 3 year old grandson whom they dote on. Linda learned
to play bridge from her mother when she was a teenager. She didn't have
enough to do as a mother of two sons and a proprietor of a growing
business so she began some continuing education classes in law, ethics,
marketing and sales before becoming a licensed realtor and soon
thereafter earned the award of 1st place Individual Realtor in the State
of Nevada. Linda says she doesn't
have a lot of time to play bridge,
(Oh really?) but she just kept slogging along and finally this June she
achieved the vaunted
rank of Life Master. Congratulations Linda! Keep
on slogging and soon you'll be Bronze.
Evelyn
Almeleh:
As the year comes to a
close, and needing only a few points to reach the 300 necessary to
qualify as a Life
Master, Evelyn Almeleh entered several of the Senior
pair events at the Reno Regional held at the end of 2008 at the Grand
Sierra Resort. Evie played with Tom Howell and Catherine Johnson and
crossed the 300 master point level on Monday when
she and Tom Howell
finished in the overall of the Monday Senior Pair event. Evie has been
a regular at the Reno Bridge Center
and has racked up over 90 master
points in this last year alone. Congratulations Evie, and now on to the
Bronze.

Rick Weiss:
Participating in several events in the Riverside Regional early
this month, Rick Weiss garnered enough gold points to qualify
for the rank of Life Master. Rick has been quite
successful in sectional and regional tournaments here in the
Reno area but also has participated in those events in other
parts of Nevada and California. Often partnering with Nels
Erickson, Reno's top masterpoint holder, Rick has been coached
to approach the game simply and not to apply too many
conventions. This Keep it Simple approach has served him
well as he often partners with unknown individuals when
traveling to distant Regional and National Tournaments.
Congratulations Rick. Now on to the Bronze |

Lars
Bruun-Andersen:
Playing club games and Regional events with a fury, Lars
became a Life Master this last Summer at last winning the
necessary Gold pigmented points to qualify. But something
happened on the way to "Life", he accumulated over 500 total
points and is now the proud possessor of the ranking of a Bronze
Master in the ACBL. Congratulations Lars, now let's get
on with achieving Silver.
