Reno Students Finish 1st year
Learning Bridge
In the Fall of
2008, with support from the Reno Unit of the American Contract
Bridge League (ACBL) and in cooperation with Jeff Freeman, Director
of the Student Activity Services Division of
the the Washoe County School
District and participating school principals, Reno Youth Bridge, Inc, a nonprofit organization,
began a fully funded pilot after-school program to teach bridge at
three Washoe County middle schools, one high school, two elementary
schools and a charter school with students in classes as low as the
4th grade. Reno Youth Bridge was established for the purpose of
administering and funding the teaching of contract bridge to middle
school and high school students in Northern Nevada. The ACBL
Education Foundation will donate playing cards, work books, lesson
plans, tee shirts and trophies to be awarded to the winners of a
class year-end tournament. Reno Youth Bridge will fund all other
expenses for teachers, materials, equipment and supplies for the
pilot after-school program. Founders Kathy Lane, Grace Martin,
Molly
Rakestraw ,
and Bud Brewer, active members of the Reno Unit of the ACBL, formed
Reno Youth Bridge to provide administrative support to those Washoe
County schools volunteering to participate in this pilot program.
Seventeen members of the Reno Unit of the ACBL have volunteered to
be teachers for this program. The entity hopes to attract donations
from parents, bridge players, and interested persons wanting to
assist Washoe County Schools develop an activity that will help
students who learn and play bridge do better in school. As
students gain experience, they will develop skills that could
provide a foundation for interscholastic competition in the future
along with a lifetime of fun and intellectual stimulation.
Reno
Gazette Journal Article![]() Dr.
Christopher Shaw, a researcher from Carlinville, IL, recently
completed an extensive
Statistical Study
that supports the conclusion
that children who learn to play bridge perform better on
standardized tests than their non-playing counterparts. The
expected total cost to implement this 16 week pilot program at the
seven designated schools in the district is estimated to be lessthan
$1000 per school for the first year. Reno Youth Bridge is being
funded by donations from its founders, unit members and the
generosity of individuals and charitable organizations wanting to
support this effort. Cash donations received by Reno Youth Bridge
will be used solely to defray the costs of the proposed bridge
teaching programs, and the promotion and financing of Youth Bridge
Tournaments in the future (all free to students under the age of
nineteen). For those parents and members of the Reno community who
would like to support this program, we invite you to learn more
about becoming a co-sponsor or making a cash contribution to Reno
